The Filibuster. Is it raciest OR does it keep politicians in check?

Go figure, from the left it’s racist as is everything today and from the right it’s a stop gap from a one party take over of the government.

Lengthy post, so are the articles but worth the time I think if you want to be informed and make a common sense decision, in my opinion.

From the left a good article from VOX with a misrepresentation of history if you care to research the history for yourself and come to your own conclusion. Missing from the “History” is Senator Robert Byrd, “He filibustered against the 1964 Civil Rights.”

Hears some excerpts from the article, it’s actually a interesting read I thought.

“The question of what to do about the filibuster — the once-arcane Senate rule that creates a de facto 60-vote threshold for major legislation — is arguably the most important topic in Washington, DC, right now.

It is the main thing blocking Senate Democrats from approving President Joe Biden’s sweeping policy agenda on party lines; as such, it has become a subject of fierce partisan (and intraparty) dispute.”

“Prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA),have argued that the filibuster has been a tool used by racists to protect white supremacy. In a Tuesday floor speech, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell denied this entirely — accusing Democrats of lying about history for political purposes.

“These talking points are an effort to use the terrible history of racism to justify a partisan power grab in the present,” McConnell said.”

“In 1917, the Senate finally decided to reform the filibuster, adding a provision that would allow two-thirds of senators to vote on a “cloture” motion that would end debate — interrupting an individual senator who won’t stop talking.

This provision, called Rule 22, was designed to make filibustering harder. But it actually had the opposite effect: It was now possible for a minority of senators to block bills by voting down cloture motions. This is how the filibuster works today (albeit with a three-fifths threshold for cloture rather than the original two-thirds, thanks to a 1975 reform).

The defenders of Jim Crow pioneered this new filibuster, successfully deploying it again and again to block civil rights bills. Richard Russell, a leading filibuster practitioner and staunch segregationist, said in 1949 that “nobody mentions any other legislation in connection with it.”

Two political scientists, Sarah Binder and Steven Smith, identified every bill between 1917 and 1994 that they believe died purely because of the filibuster. Among these, half were civil rights bills, including anti-lynching bills proposed in 1922 and 1935.”

Why the debate over the filibuster matters

“It’s fair to wonder why any of this matters. The mere fact that the filibuster as we know it is a “Jim Crow relic,” as Obama once put it, doesn’t necessarily say anything about whether it’s desirable to keep around today.

To understand why the history of the filibuster matters, let’s take a closer look at the arguments in favor of keeping the 60-vote threshold. Of these, the most prominent by far is that the filibuster is necessary to protect minority rights. National Review’s Dan McLaughlin made this point clearly in a recent essay:” ( Read the rest of the article here, it’s actually a interesting read.)The filibuster’s racist history, explained

Now from Mitch McConnell: 03.23.21 U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) delivered the following remarks today on the Senate floor regarding the legislative filibuster:

‘If our Democratic colleagues really believe what they’re saying, did they themselves use a racist tool against Senator Scott’s police reform bill last year? Did they use a racist relic when they delayed the CARES Act or blocked legislation to protect unborn babies who can feel pain? […] Or is our colleagues’ story that the filibuster was not an offensive relic as recently as last summer, but magically became an offensive relic the instant Democrats came to have a majority?’

“While House Democrats try to overturn a certified election result from last November, some Senate Democrats are agitating to break Senate rules to ram through a partisan rewrite of all 50 states’ election laws.

“The 60-vote threshold is the reason why huge pillars of domestic policy don’t oscillate back and forth every time a different party wins the majority.

“Think of something like the Mexico City Policy, the executive-branch policy about funding overseas abortions. It has flipped back and forth every single time the White House has changed party since the 1980s. Republican presidents issue the memo. Democratic presidents retract it.

“The legislative filibuster is what keeps the entirety of federal law from working that way.”

“For a long time, Senators on both sides have recognized the Senate and the country are better off with some stability. Both sides have understood there are no permanent majorities in American politics, so a system that gives both sides a voice benefits everyone in the long run.

“That’s what 33 of our Democratic colleagues said just a few years ago, when they all signed a joint letter insisting that rules protecting debate on legislation be preserved.

“That’s what President Biden believed consistently throughout his long Senate tenure. About 15 years ago, then-Senator Biden said killing the filibuster would be, quote, ‘an example of the arrogance of power.’ He restated his long-held position during the campaign just last year.

“Here’s what my colleague the Democratic Leader said in 2017.

“The ‘legislative filibuster’ is ‘the most important distinction between the Senate and the House… Let’s find a way to further protect the 60-vote rule for legislation.’ End quote.

“The Democratic Leader, less than four years ago.

“And Democrats didn’t just spend the last four years supporting the filibuster; they spent four years using it!

“We could have had federal legislation on the books since last summer putting more body cameras on police officers, requiring fuller incident reporting to the FBI, and finally making lynching a federal crime. Among other things. But Democrats stopped it.

“A few months before, they used the filibuster to briefly turn the bipartisan sprint toward the CARES Act into a partisan standoff. The press marveled that Senate Democrats had the gall to block relief — a tactic that helped tank the markets — in order to demand further changes.

“And back in early 2018, Senate Democrats used the filibuster to block government funding and force a brief government shutdown over immigration. One of the Democratic Leader’s first major acts as the leader of his conference was to wield the filibuster to shut down the entire government.

“So the Democratic side just spent four years defending and happily using the same Senate rule that many of our colleagues now attack.

“About a year ago, former President Obama launched a new, coordinated, and very obvious campaign to get liberals repeating the claim that the Senate rules are a relic of racism and bigotry.

“That came just a month after Democrats had used the filibuster to kill Senator Tim Scott’s police reform and anti-lynching bill.

“These talking points are an effort to use the terrible history of racism to justify a partisan power grab in the present. It’s not unlike what we saw last summer when some protest mobs ended up defacing statues of people who actually crusaded for justice — like Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and the abolitionist Mathias Baldwin.

“Mistakenly damaging good institutions because of our troubled past.

“Multiple fact-checkers have torn into this simplistic notion that the rules of the Senate are rooted in racism. ( Read the rest of his remarks here, Democrats’ Filibuster Threats Aren’t About Principle, Just Raw Power

Another good read from The Hill

“On September 30, 1788, Pennsylvania became the first state to elect its United States senators, one of whom was William Maclay.  In his 1789 journal Senator Maclay wrote, “I gave my opinion in plain language that the confidence of the people was departing from us, owing to our unreasonable delays. The design of the Virginians and of the South Carolina gentlemen was to talk away the time, so that we could not get the bill passed.”

“Our Founding Fathers intended the Senate to be a continuing body that allows for open and unlimited debate and the protection of minority rights.  Senators have understood this since the Senate first convened.

In his notes of the Constitutional Convention on June 26, 1787, James Madison recorded that the ends to be served by the Senate were “first, to protect the people against their rulers, secondly, to protect the people against the transient impressions into which they themselves might be led… They themselves, as well as a numerous body of Representatives, were liable to err also, from fickleness and passion.  A necessary fence against this danger would be to select a portion of enlightened citizens, whose limited number, and firmness might seasonably interpose against impetuous councils.”  That “fence” was the United States Senate.

During this 111th Congress in particular the minority has threatened to filibuster almost every matter proposed for Senate consideration.   I find this tactic contrary to each Senator’s duty to act in good faith.

I share the profound frustration of my constituents and colleagues as we confront this situation.  The challenges before our nation are far too grave, and too numerous, for the Senate to be rendered impotent to address them, and yet be derided for inaction by those causing the delay.

There are many suggestions as to what we should do.  I know what we must not do.

We must never, ever, tear down the only wall – the necessary fence – this nation has against the excesses of the Executive Branch and the resultant haste and tyranny of the majority.

The path to solving our problem lies in our thoroughly understanding it.  Does the difficulty reside in the construct of our rules or in the ease of circumventing them? ( Read the rest of the article here, The filibuster and its consequences (Sen. Robert Byrd)

God Bless America and you.

I breath of fresh air in a insane world. (Caution), common sense and actual thought required.

I first became aware of this guy watching Tucker Carlson Tonight he’s been on a few times and I always say I’ve got to remember and look him up but always forget. Here’s the most recent one I watched. The Left, the truth and the ‘right’ not to be offended

H/T to PUMABydesign001’s Blog whom I’ve followed forever and I believe is one of the first Blogger’s I ever followed. Check out her About page on her Blog. Bookworm Beat 1/29/18 — the Jordan Peterson illustrated edition

This post is mostly about Jordan Peterson, explaining his popularity and the great mass of memes in his name. I’ve added some funny posters, too.

I’d been aware of Jordan Peterson for some time because the University of Toronto psychology professor took a stand against Canadian law forcing people to put language to the service of transgender identities. As is true for me, Peterson is willing as a courtesy to use someone’s preferred pronouns, but government coercion is another thing entirely. So yay, Prof. Peterson!

I checked out Jordan B Peterson on Twitter @jordanbpeterson were I came across this post from another good site I enjoy PATHEOS . As I posted on social media earlier this morning, An absolute must read!!!

The Mischaracterization Of Jordan Peterson Isn’t New Or Special

Jordan Peterson has been all over the news lately from a viral interview with Cathy Newman. In the interview, Newman consistently mischaracterizes Peterson and tries to make his positions sound more extreme than they really were. Peterson easily deflected all of the aggressive “gotcha” questions with calm explanations of his actual positions.

This Atlantic article does a great job summarizing the problems in this interview. Let’s look at an example:

Here’s another video you might enjoy from Tucker.

Anti-PC prof: I’m guilty for the ‘structure’ of my thinking

As always, God bless America and you. MAGA

Wow,rare moments of encouragement on TV last night.

Last night I saw a few things on TV that acutely encouraged me. That’s rare these day’s with the Rino’s working with Obama and the “Politically Correct” madness that is running rampant in America now day’s.

First off caught this this morning. Amazing all the world calls us racists and all kinds of nice things for wanting to secure our boarders. Check this out from the EU and the majority of immigrants are African. “The European Union’s president is calling for a crackdown on migrants who don’t qualify for asylum as people fleeing conflict and poverty arrive on Europe’s shores in huge numbers.

EU President Donald Tusk said Thursday at a summit of the bloc’s leaders that “we need to contain illegal migration and this should be our priority.” Read more here. EU leader urges crackdown on ‘illegal migration:’ those seeking jobs, not fleeing war

Found this too this morning from a friend on Twitter. It’s a good read on the “Trans-Pacific Partnership” the Rino’s are helping Obama with. “President Obama’s executive orders have already stripped Congress of much of its authority over immigration, carbon emissions and the environment. Why help Obama further extend the transfer of power to supranational bodies and expand the Obama Doctrine – the tenets of which include the downsizing of America, leading from behind and engaging the world through international rather than American institutions?

Indeed, it may be that Obama is pushing TPP under the guise of bipartisan trade expansion while being more intent on advancing the next steps of his very partisan political agenda. For instance, leaked parts of TPP show that the agreement enables multinational corporations to end-run U.S. laws that protect IP rich and venture capital-backed companies. The agreement facilitates the implementation of environmental regulations – such as those dealing with so-called climate change – that would trump those established by U.S. lawmakers. TPP may also establish a regime with the power to override Congressional actions imposing restrictions on the “free flow of labor” between the U.S. and Mexico.” Read more here. Trans-Pacific deal more than trade

Moving on to last night’s like’s.

The V.A.Immigration and the future of America.

Continued from my morning jaunt around the web. Hope you find it interesting and informative. A few great “Politically Incorrect” articles.

By MICHELLE MALKIN — MAY 23, 2014

“A government that fails to secure its borders is guilty of dereliction of duty. A government that fails to care for our men and women on the frontlines is guilty of malpractice. A government that puts the needs of illegal aliens above U.S. veterans for political gain should be prosecuted for criminal neglect bordering on treason.”

“Compare, contrast, and weep:”

“In Sacramento, Calif., lawmakers are moving forward with a budget-busting plan to extend government-funded health insurance to at least 1.5 million illegal aliens.

In Los Angeles, federal bureaucrats callously canceled an estimated 40,000 diagnostic tests and treatments for American veterans with cancer and other illnesses to cover up a decade-long backlog.

In New York, doctors report that nearly 40 percent of their patients receiving kidney dialysis are illegal aliens. A survey of nephrologists in 44 states revealed that 65 percent of them treat illegal aliens with kidney disease.” Read more here. How America Treats Illegal Aliens Vs. Veterans

Another great article from American Renaissance By John Bennett, American Thinker, May 23, 2014

The ‘Almost Exclusively White Phenomenon’ of Conservatism Some high lights from the article follow.

The Forgotten Majority versus the “Disadvantaged

“After all, America is rapidly importing economically poor, poorly educated, low-skilled immigrants. Those immigrants generate racial inequalities, and inequality is then used to shame and guilt the majority. This is the neurotic cycle I call “America’s never-ending shame.” A constant influx of the “disadvantaged” guarantees a racialized political system and the growth of a Leviathan welfare state.

As it turns out, the victim mentality and historical grievances don’t foster free-market enthusiasm or government restraint. Fifty-five percent of Hispanics have a “negative” view of the term “capitalism,” which is even worse than the 47% of self-identified “Liberal Democrats” who have a negative view of capitalism, according to a 2011 Pew poll. These preferences unfortunately make complete sense, given what we know about the life circumstances of immigrant groups.

According to Census data, 43 percent of immigrants who have been in the U.S. for more than 20 years are using welfare benefits. Fifty-seven percent of households headed by Mexican immigrants are on some form of welfare, compared with 6% of immigrants from the United Kingdom.

Sociologists Edward Telles and Vilma Ortiz, authors of Generations of Exclusion, insist that Mexican-Americans have accomplished “little assimilation” with regard to education and socio-economic status, but that’s because they’re “[n]ot fully allowed to incorporate into American society.” When that view is taught to vulnerable, frustrated, or “disadvantaged” people, we can expect bitterness.

There will be more bitterness and blame to go around if we continue the influx of the “disadvantaged,” given that newly arrived immigrants will remain poorly educated. Recently arrived young Latino immigrants are half as likely (29%) to express desire to get a college degree as are native-born young Latinos (60%), reports Pew Research’s Hispanic Trend Project.

The Pew report also offered the following insight into some crucial viewpoints:

Latino adults (ages 26 and older) see a mix of reasons that Latinos students do not perform as well as other groups in school:

More than six-in-ten (61%) say a major reason is that parents of Hispanic students do not play an active role in helping their children succeed.

Nearly six-in-ten (58%) say the limited English skills of Hispanic students is a major reason.

Almost half (47%) say the different cultural backgrounds of Hispanic students and their teachers is a major reason.

More than four-in-ten (41%) say Hispanic students not working as hard as other students is a major reason.

Current immigration policy guarantees a steady resupply of the behavior and attitudes described above.

Some Republicans believe that Hispanics will support the GOP on the basis of social issues. Yet the majority of Latinos support gay marriage. Most importantly, Hispanics have a 53% out-of-wedlock birth rate, which is twice the white rate (see graph below). This does not bode well for the ideology of limited government and personal responsibility.

So that’s a snapshot of polling on Hispanic views of the American social order and race relations, from the group that supposedly “should be a natural Republican constituency.” Unsurprisingly, inequality, welfare dependency, and racial resentment–the status quo under multiculturalism–do not transform people into conservatives.”

Affirmative Action, America’s Atonement for Past Sins

“Big government and racial resentment reach their pinnacle with affirmative action. Don’t forget, Attorney General Eric Holder has warned us that affirmative actionhas only just begun. Supporters of racial preferences have powerful allies in pro-amnesty elites such as Eric Cantor, Renee Ellmers, Eric Holder, and Justice Sonya Sotomayor.” Read more here. The ‘Almost Exclusively White Phenomenon’ of Conservatism

“Debate” American Common Core Style: Our Top Orators in Action “The Nuts Are Running the Asylum.

Published on May 4, 2014 The 2014 Cross Examination Debate Association’s national championship was held at Indiana University. The all African American female team from Towson University defeated the all African American male team from the University of Oklahoma. Though this my be a first for African American women, it is not a real win for women or African Americans, but a loss for collegiate debate specifically and America in general. I am not sure what the winners won, but it certainly wasn’t a debate. In fact, to enable this hallow victory, the very concept of debate was thrown aside. In the name of political correctness and affirmative action, we have destroyed college debate, simply to bestow a meaningless trophy on students who demonstrate no actual debate skills. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. However it provides a shocking example as to why America is a nation in decline.

Final Exam College Students Asked About Benghazi – MRCTV .org

Published on May 24, 2014,Final Exam: College Students on Benghazi MRCTV’s Dan Joseph goes back on campus to see what students know about Benghazi.

Finally. From  Coach Dave Daubenmire — May 23, 2014 Couldn’t have said it any better.

“I doubt if this commentary will get “shared” by most who read it. It is part of the “collateral damage” of today’s thought-phobia.

But I hear the “amens” from those of you who share my “bigotry” against the anti-Christian bigots. There are thousands of you who agree with me. But you won’t say so. At least not to others. And you certainly won’t “share” it on to your “lists” because of some wussies who, you are afraid, might be offended.

What the hell are you afraid of? Why have so many people become so paralyzed by what others may think? Silence isn’t golden…it is yellow. The godhaters are winning because they have silenced your voice. Your unwillingness to speak up and defend what you believe is giving the progressives a victory without firing a shot. If they silence you, they silence the voice of God.

We have become afraid to bark. Dumb dogs is what Isaiah 56 calls us. Dumb dogs…afraid to bark.

What, for Pete’s sake, are you afraid of?

Come on now. Have you ever taken the time to take a hard look at the weenies who make up the thought police? I mean, really look at them. Can you explain to me what it is that would make a God-fearing man cower in the face of such impotent opposition? What in Sam Hill are you afraid of?

Look at the Progressive Democrats who are currently riding herd on the American culture. If they lived in your neighborhood, where the “real” Americans live, would any of them have any qualities that would cause you to peek out from behind the curtains when they drove by?

Hillary Clinton? Nancy Pelosi? Harry Reid? What about Dick Durbin, Chuck Schumer, John Kerry, or Debbie Whats-in-her-mouth Shultz? Are you kidding me? Sergeant Shultz from Hogan’s Heroes knows more than they do, and he was constantly telling us “I know nothing…” Seems to me that is the same position that President Homobama has carved out.” Read more here. What, For Pete’s Sake, Are You Afraid Of, America?

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Conservatives and Christians. Now “Lets Roll”.

Happy New Year and as Paul wrote to Timothy, “Grace, mercy and peace from GOD the FATHER and CHRIST JESUS our LORD”!

2 Corinthians 5:17 New King James Version (NKJV) 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

I haven’t been social much last few days. Wanted to just take a step back, forget about the news and all the “Talking Points” for a little and the weather here has been so great just wanted to get out and enjoy GOD’s handiwork for awhile. I really enjoyed and related to this mornings devotional. Don’t read everyday but most days and when I do of course GOD speaks to my heart! Check it out

“SHOW AND TELL”

“I’m NOT one to wear my faith on my sleeve. Christians can do a disservice to unbelievers by being obnoxious or judgmental.

I’m a chapel leader and have been since my second year in the minors.

People know where I I’m coming from with out my having to harp on it all the time. I know that the message of CHRIST offends because it calls sin sin and says we are all sinners.

There’s no way to soften the truth. It’s jarring and can alienate people until they begin to realize that it’s true.

My pushing it down everyone’s throat will not make it any easier for them to investigate what it’s all about.

I just tell people about GOD naturally, when opportunities arise or when I’m asked. It’s amazing how many people notice when you’re straight.

If your not a carouser, not a womanizer, not foul-mouthed, not a gossip, it get’s around!

We’re far from perfect. We fail. There are people who may think we are insincere or who think we’re judgmental.

I can’t defend myself against people who say I’m phony. Only my family, my true friends and I know who I really am inside. I’ll have to answer for that someday.

I can only do and be what I think GOD want’s me to do and be. I never want to embarrass HIM or bring HIM shame.”

Author: Orel Hershiser

I can relate to this, it  just really speaks and encourages me and is how I feel. Remember GOD didn’t make us all pastor’s, evangelists so on. He made us all different, with different gifts and callings, our job is to be as faithful as we can to what HE’s called us to do and be.

As 2013 passes and 2014 begins there is a lot ahead of us. A couple of things I hope we all remember is what a few truly Conservative and bibles believing Christians did in 2013.

A handful of true Conservative with the backing of “The People” did some pretty amazing things if you think about and took a stand against “The Status Quo”, the establishment GOP and the Progressive movement that is dead set on the “Fundamental Chang of America” and the removal of GOD from our history, remembrance and country.

“The People” stood up, stood together and backed a man for his right to say in public the TRUTH of the bible. “The People” saw that it IS possible to take a stand against the progressive’s and the liberal GOD denying democrat party and the fewer then ( being generous here) 5% of the population that is hell bent on “The fundamental Change of America”.

2013 brought to light what a lot of Conservative had been warning about for years. The I.R.S scandal, Benghazi, the massive failure of the administrations foreign polices and more often then not siding with Americas enemy’s then her allies, N.S.A., election fraud the out right lying and miss guidance of the American people and of course Obamacare.

Let’s not forget the defining silence from this administration as Christian around the world are being purged from the earth and in this country being silenced and attacked by the very government it helped set up in the begging of this great country.

2014 is the year when we can start to take our country back. It will take years to fix what the Progressives and the most recently administration has done to this country but in 2014 we can start to finish what started in 2010 but has been paused because people believed the establishment GOP and the politicians that didn’t keep there promises to defend the Constitution and Conservative values.

“If we Christians banded together and took a stand, perhaps we wouldn’t be losing so much ground in what the media is calling the “cultural war.” However, it is not a cultural war—it is a religious war against Christians and the biblical truths we stand for. Some churches have fallen into the trap of being politically correct, under the disguise of tolerance.” Read more, Franklin Graham: Duck Dynasty and the Ducking Church

So, my hope and prayer for the new year is that people will remember, pray, stand together and start on the road to bring this country back to it’s former glory and the “Light on The Hill” status that set us apart from all others lead by GOD. There is a definite choice to be maid between the GOD denying Democrats led by the Progressive movement, the GOP establishment and RINO’s and the TRUE Conservatives and bible believing Americans with respect for all.

2 Timothy 1:7 New English Translation (NET) 7 “For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
